The Day You Chose to Fight

Do you know what today is? Chances are you didn't see it coming until it got here. It's not a day that people get off of work or school, so many people don't even think of it until someone else points it out.

It was five years ago that our country was attacked, five years ago that nearly three thousand people died just because of someone else's hatred. Five years. I know exactly where I was when I found out and I remember thinking my teacher was reading some sort of joke because the whole thing was so unbelievable. But no. It really happened. We can't forget it.

I'm not going to sit here and say that this is the worst thing that's ever happened, because I know full well that it isn't. There are terrible thing happening around the world every day. Wars, genocide, murder, suicide, complete poverty... But September 11 was the first time that our country was hit like this. Don't shrug it off, don't forget about it, don't pretend it's not a big deal just so you don't have to think about it.

Let this remind you that freedom is expensive. Freedom as a country and freedom as an individual. Freedom means knowing what you believe, what you value, what you stand for, and fighting for it. But it also means allowing others to be free. Don't let your hatred and anger at someone else take away your freedom or theirs. Learn to respect people for who they are; you don't have to agree with them, but don't hate them just because of it. (I'm not saying that truth is relative- I want to make sure you know that. But if you don't respect people in the first place, they will never listen to anything you have to say.) The Bible says to love others as yourself and to forgive their faults. That's what Jesus did. He came here because He loves us, He showed that love to EVERYONE, and then He died so we could be free. Don't forget.

Five years is a long time, but seems so short all at once. Stay strong and never give up. This is the day you chose to fight for your freedom. I love you.
