A Prayer

A Prayer Spoken at the Hillsdale College September Eleventh Remeberance Ceremony:

'One Nation under God'—that is our pledge, Lord.

Your Word says, 'Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His inheritance.'

By Your grace, we inherit much. We are the beneficiaries of the thousands who have laid down their lives so that we could be free. And we stand here surrounded by reminders on our campus that we live in a place of freedom. When the Class of 2007 graduates next year, it will be on the four-hundredth anniversary of the settlement at Jamestown. As we join here tonight, we are reminded that our task—our purpose—is the preservation of this country for the next four hundred years.

Protect our nation from those who would destroy our purpose from within, and from those who would destroy it from without in the midst of this war.

We pray for Leah’s brother, and for Aaron Hummel, as they go to Iraq to serve. We pray for our military in Iraq and around the world who have committed themselves to the cause of liberty.

In that cause, may we be students. May we study liberty to know how great a thing it is that you have set our nation apart to shine as a beacon of hope. As we join here tonight, may we renew our purpose: 'One Nation under God.' "

Amen.
