I'm Back

Dear Readers,

It's the dawn of a new year and a new semester at Hillsdale College.

Thank you for your support and interest in my blog. It is encouraging to note that many of you faithfully checked my blog for updates day after day.

It's good to be back, refreshed, and ready to take on the challenges this year will bring.

The past month has carried several important stories I was unable to cover, but there are few you should be made aware of.

First, I received an urgent email today from Donald Wildmon, founder and Chairman of the America Family Association. According to Wildmon, the Senate is poised to approve a bill that would effectively destroy the AFA and other grass roots organizations like them. In his words:
The U.S. Senate is poised to pass Senate Bill 1 (Section 220), which would effectively keep AFA and every other pro-family organization in America from providing you information on bills in Congress. Under Senate Bill 1 (Section 220), we would only be able to provide you information on a bill at a high cost and at great danger of being penalized by Congress.
After reviewing the bill, I agree with his assessment.

Also, Section 5(c) 1, A, of the bill reads:
`(A) Estimates of amounts in excess of $10,0000 shall be rounded to the nearest $20,000.
I'm concerned that the official report of this bill has such an error in it. Is it ten thousand dollars? Or one hundred thousand dollars? I'd assume it's one hundred thousand, but I don't know, and neither would anyone else. Let's hope the actual bill doesn't have that typo. Either way, it's disturbing that our Senate doesn't know what they're writing.

In local news, the Howell School board continues it's belligerent death march. Facing pressure from out-of-district atheist groups including Americans United for Seperation of Church and State and Michigan Atheists, the board refused to even give a proposed curriculum from the National Council on Bible Curriculum in Public schools, which would study the Bible as literature, an up-or-down vote. Most likely, they're too afraid to. Also, they approved the use of a filthy book, The Freedom Writer's Diary, for use in a tenth grade classroom, after Howell teacher Ms. Capy (a notorious liberal, you may remember her as the adviser of the Diversity Club and instigator of the Gay Pride flag debacle) violated known procedures and had her Advanced English class read the book even though it was not approved by the school board. Capy's attempt to sneak it under the radar failed when parents complained, but she was not disciplined for her misconduct. The book includes dozens of uses of the "f" word, graphic description of oral sex, and other gratuitous vulgarities that frankly do not belong in minds of a tenth grader, much less a publicly-funded place of learning. If a student were to say the words included in that book, he could be expelled. An adult could be thrown in jail. And yet the board force-feeds it to our kids.

This controversy comes in the midsts of a disastrously mis-managed move to a new high school where the Board has chosen to implement "flex scheduling," forcing students to attend school in the middle of nowhere at odd hours from seven in the morning until ten at night.

I honestly doubt the school board could be doing much worse if it tried.
